NorCal Matchday #10

The final month of the spring soccer season is here and leagues and cup competitions are going down to the wire, with several important matchups slated for Mother’s Day Weekend. This week, NorCal Matchday returns to the State Cup, where the U15-U19 age groups are playing semifinal games Saturday.

Here are your games of the week:

U19 Boys State Cup Semifinal
5/9Clovis Crossfire
8:00 a.m. @ Salinas Regional Soccer Complex #1
Reno APEX
As a seeded team in the knockout rounds, Clovis Crossfire only had to win two matches to reach this point, but did so in style, scoring a combined seven goals against Stanford Strikers and Mendocino County Sports Academy. Furthermore, they allowed just two goals in those matches, proving that they are strong on both sides of the field. Meanwhile, Reno have hit the back of the net three times in the elimination rounds, narrowly edging Natomas FA 3-2 in the round of 32 before posting a pair of three-goal wins in the round of 16 and quarterfinals.
U17 Girls State Cup Semifinal
5/9Albion SC Central Valley
10:05 a.m. @ Davis Legacy Soccer Complex #8
San Juan South
Defending State Cup champions San Juan South have begun the knockout rounds of the competition by putting up an excellent title defense--South have posted two shutout wins so far, scoring eight times against Santa Cruz United and Central California Soccer Alliance. Hoping to knock them off their pedestal will be Albion SC Central Valley, who have absolutely ground out results the past two rounds. After knocking off Granite Bay FC 4-3 in the round of 16, Albion defeated Solano Surf on penalties to reach the semifinals.
U16 Girls State Cup Semifinal
5/9Elk Grove Soccer
12:10 p.m. @ Davis Legacy Soccer Complex #8
California Magic
Both Elk Grove Soccer and California Magic have scored exactly seven goals in two knockout round matches while allowing just two goals in the same period, making this matchup hard to predict. Elk Grove reached this stage in the competition by knocking off San Juan South and ECFC Salinas, while Cal Magic defeated a pair of Bay Area rivals in Pleasanton RAGE and Marin FC.
U16 Boys State Cup Semifinal
5/9Clovis Crossfire
12:10 p.m. @ Salinas Regional Soccer Complex #1
East Bay United
Clovis Crossfire enter this match with the pedigree of both being the defending State Cup champions and currently sitting in the top three of the NorCal ECNL RL. Their knockout round matches began with a 3-0 victory before they defeated Mission Youth Soccer League via a 2-0 scoreline. Looking to knock them off of their perch are East Bay United, who have made it this far by the skin of their teeth. After defeating AC Marin 1-0 to start off the elimination rounds, EBU beat Stockton TLJ and SF United on penalties to continue their dream run.
