04/05 PDP Boys show their mettle in State Selection matches

In one of the final PDP events of the 2018 calendar, state selection teams from the 04/05 boys player pool met last Wednesday in San Ramon to continue their high-level of competition, with each of the North, Central, and South squads playing each other squad. On the night, it was the North that fared the best, scoring a pair of 2-1 victories, while the Central posted a 5-1 win over the South in the final game of the night to ensure that they would go home on a positive note.

MATCH RECAPS

On the night, the North Region came out on top, winning both of its matches, while the Central also pulled out a victory.

Game 1: North 2 – South 1

North Scorers: Avalos, Anderson
South Scorer: Forster

The first goal of the evening came just 10 minutes into the action as North attacker Angel Avalos cheekily evaded a defender at the top of the 18, opening up some space to put his side up 1-0 with a clever chip over the onrushing goalkeeper. That’s where the scoreline stood at the half before the South equalized one minute into the second period, with Lou Forster somehow finding his way behind the North defense to volley home. Just four minutes later, however, Zach Anderson found a winner for North, calmly finishing a rebound into the lower left corner to give his side the victory.

Game 2: North 2 – Central 1

North Scorers: Carbajal, Strangio
South Scorer: Leon

Playing back-to-back games, North again scored in the 10th minute of the first half, this time through Sebastian Carbajal, who smashed the ball home from close range. But the North again allowed a second half equalizer as a defensive lapse allowed Luis Leon to head home to level the game at 1-1. However, North were again able to find a winner, this time coming just five minutes after the South goal as Nick Strangio hit an outside of the right foot blast from 18 yards to ensure that North would end the day with a perfect record.

Game 3: Central 5 – South 1

Central Scorers: Abellana 2, Leon, Luna, Zamudio
South Scorer: Rodriguez

While this match was tied 1-1 at the half thanks to goals from Central’s Gabriel Abellana and South’s Dominick Rodriguez, the floodgates opened just after the break. Luis Leon, Alexis Luna, Eduardo Zamudio, and Gabreil Abellana all put the ball in the back of the net to give Central a commanding 5-1 victory, which also gave them the most goals on the night with six overall.
