LIGA NorCal Matchday No. 10

After some exciting action in adult soccer this fall in Northern California, LIGA NorCal Matchday is headed back to LIGA Regional – Peninsula, where with seven games played, the standings are tight — no team is averaging fewer than a point per game as most of the games have been competitive. Here is your LIGA NorCal Game of the Week recap:

Gordon Biersch FC 5 – South San Francisco Athletic 5

Goalscorers: Biersch: Hertler (2), Oaka, Mosharrafa, Quiroz

SSFA: Nadell (2), Cadam (2), Ma,

It didn’t take long for the action to happen, and Gordon Biersch were the first to capitalize when Dan Oaka found himself with time at the edge of the box. He left the SSFA goalkeeper with little chance as he found the top corner to put the away side in front with only 11 minutes played.

The home side looked to respond quickly, and they did just that, when not two minutes later, midfielder Brenden Cadam managed to work some space in the center of the opposition box and slot home into the bottom left hand corner to level the score.

The fans only had to wait another four minutes for the home side to find themselves on top as striker Kevin Ma connected with ball across from speedy winger Greg Hui to make it 2-1 SSFA.

Both sides kept trading attacks and at the 33 minute mark Sam Nadell kept his composure and added his name to the already busy score sheet with another Greg Hui assist. The two wingers combing to give the home side a 3-1 lead.

If South City thought that it was plain sailing from there they were sadly mistaken, as Gordon Biersch searched for an opportunity to get back in the game.

Their efforts were rewarded five minutes before the end of the first half when Gordon Biersch found the head of Adam Mosharrafa with a long throw, where Mosharrafa was able to nod the ball home to make it 3-2.

Neither team were happy going into the break with the score like that and the home side found themselves with space in the box again. This time the defender made a challenge that was deemed a foul. The resulting penalty was calmly slotted home by Brendan Cadam to give him a first half brace and to put SSFAC 4-2 ahead with only a couple minutes of the half to play.

Gordon Biersch has other ideas tho and in injury time the midfielder wearing number 17 carved an opportunity inside the South city box and again brought the game back to within a score.

An action-packed first half was always going to be hard act to follow, but both teams started the second half the way the first finished.

Ten minutes into the second period and it was Sam Nadell again who found himself putting the ball home after a Carlos Ballesteros cross was parried into his path to make it 5-3 to the hosts.

The game began to cool down a bit after that with both teams having exerted a lot of energy in the opening 60 minutes. However Gordon Biersch kept at it and were rewarded for their efforts after a clumsy tackle inside the box gave them their own spot kick on the 65th minute. Junior Quiroz stepped up and made no mistake, again bringing the score back within one.

With the score now close Gordon Biersch got a second wind and pressed hard. It took only seven another minutes from them to find their equalizer as Craig Hertler headed in their fifth after a great save from the home keeper.

Both sides continued to press, searching for a winner, however neither side seemed to be able to find the final pass to craft a decent chance in the closing stages, leaving the scoreline level on five goals apiece to end an absolute barnburner of a match.
