NorCal Crowns U9/U10 State Cup Champions
After months of high-level play and tough competition, the U9-U10 State Cup finally culminated this past weekend at Woodward Park in Manteca as hundreds of teams took part in games with a wide variety of titles on the line. But in a drama-filled two days, four different teams were crowned champions of the State Division, in addition to the multitude of squads who lifted trophies in the other divisions. Here are your State Division recaps:
U9 Boys
LFC Bay Area Academy 6 – Almaden FC 0
After knocking off one of the favorites in Modesto Ajax in the semifinals, LFC Bay Area Academy came to play in the final, defeating Almaden FC via a 6-0 scoreline. The man of the match on the day was Jeffrey Lara, who scored a hat trick on a trio of well-taken goals, the first coming on a breakaway after LFC were already 1-0 up. The reason LFC were 1-0 up: Francisco Rowda, who scored the opening goal of the game and completed his brace in the first half with a well-taken free kick. Damien Duarte also scored for LFC in what was a dominating performance.
U9 Girls
California Odyssey 3 – Mustang SC 1
After Brooke Ennen and Macie Lomeli traded goals in regular time for Mustang SC and California Odyssey, respectively, this game went to overtime with both sides looking to take the title. But there was only one side after regular time was up as Odyssey scored twice in overtime to complete a 3-1 victory. The first goal came courtesy of another strike from Lomeli, who hit a 20-yard free kick into the upper left corner of the net before Aliyah Cuevas sealed the game with a coolly-taken penalty to give Odyssey the Cup.
U10 Boys
Modesto Ajax 3 – Davis Legacy 2
What originally appeared to be a blowout between Modesto Ajax and Davis Legacy became a close game late as Ajax just held on to claim their State Cup title. Xavier Rodriguez was the star early for Ajax, scoring the first goal of the game on a smart cutback before hitting the back of the net for a 3-0 lead after Colt Moring provided the second goal. While the match appeared to be over, Legacy mounted a late comeback, with Noah Beltran and Andrew Aguilar both tallying, but the Davis effort fell just short and Modesto lifted the trophy.
U10 Girls
MVLA 6 – Clovis Crossfire 2
While Clovis Crossfire scored right off the bat through Makenna Stott, this game was all MVLA, who scored three goals in the next 10 minutes to ultimately prevail 6-2. Aleah Carvajal was the star on the day, scoring a hat trick, while Thea Perry added a brace for MVLA and Kiyomi Yoshimura hit the back of the net to round out the scoring. Alexa Garza also scored for Clovis, but ultimately MVLA saw the game out over Clovis and ended up lifting the trophy.
