NPL Weekly: August 24-25 Recap

The NPL finally returned this past weekend as teams all across the state battled for important points to either secure their Champions League qualification, for the boys, or take an early lead in the year-long girls Champions League. As a reminder, fans can submit video to NorCal using the hashtag #NorCalGotM. Those involved may be nominated to a fan vote on social media in which the winner will be awarded tickets to a Sacramento Republic FC or San Jose Earthquakes game. Here are your game of the week recaps:

NPL SCHEDULES AND RESULTS

NPL MATCHDAY

U17 Boys NPL 1 North

Heritage Wolves 1 – Union Sacramento FC 1

Union Scorer: Anyimi
Heritage Scorer: Own goal

Despite each playing a free-flowing, attacking game, defending State Cup champions Heritage Wolves found themselves scoreless with defending Champions League runners up Union Sacramento in their NPL opener. But just as it looked like the game might end without a goal, Jordan Anyimi put Union up with a smart near post finish, only for Heritage to equalize late via an own goal that gave each side a split of the points.

KEY MATCHES

U16 Boys NPL 1 East

Davis Legacy 0 – Marin FC Blue 0

Defending Champions League champions Davis Legacy looked to open up their title defense by garnering all three points at home against a Marin FC side that didn’t even qualify for last spring’s top division. But the visitors and underdogs were able to fend off a powerful Legacy attack as neither side could find the back of the net in a scoreless draw.

U15 Girls Champions League

Pleasanton Rage 0 – California Odyssey 6

Odyssey Scorers: Bracha (4), Naron, Rodriguez

In a matchup between two top Champions League teams from the previous season, defending champions California Odyssey put in a dominating performance against rivals Pleasanton Rage. The Odyssey scored early and often, with Bailey Bracha accounting for four goals in the first 33 minutes alone. Madison Naron added a fifth before halftime before Malyah Rodriguez finished the hosts off late with a sixth strike.

U16 Girls Champions League

Mustang SC 1 – Clovis Crossfire 2

Clovis Scorer: Nardella, Bosworth
Mustang Scorer: de la Cruz

Defending Champions League winners Clovis Crossfire took the lead in this game in just the 10th minute thanks to a goal from Catherine Nardella. But as soon as they thought they were safe, Mustang equalized through Emma de la Cruz, only for Clovis’ Alyssa Bosworth to score the winner just before halftime off an assist from Jessica Montelongo.
