League Cup Makeups Scheduled For This Weekend

After rainouts forced the postponement of the second set of League Cup games on the boys side, NorCal Premier Soccer’s new interleague competition returns this weekend as teams will face off in up to two matches at the brand new Placer Valley Sports Complex in Roseville.
Bringing together sides from the ECNL RL, NPL, ECNL, and MLS Next, the inaugural League Cup was created to give clubs from different leagues the opportunity to play meaningful matches against each other in ways that the current youth soccer structure doesn’t.
“The League Cup is a major initiative that highlights our desire for teams from different platforms to earn the opportunity to play each other,” said NorCal Director of Competitions Daniel Chamberlain. “There is such a high value in all of the teams from these leagues gaining experience playing in knockout competitions. Most high-level teams don’t earn these opportunities enough through just league play–we know that those types of games are an important part of player and team development.”
The first round of matches took place all the way back in August as each of the U15-U19 teams involved met at Davis Legacy Soccer Complex to play two group stage games over a two day period.
While the girls were able to complete their fall slate of matches at the Girls Fall College Showcase, the Boys Fall College Showcase was canceled due to unsafe playing conditions, leading to this weekend’s makeup matches.
On Saturday each team will be in action as squads play their third and final group stage game, before cutting to the quarterfinals, which will be on Sunday.
Those who come out victorious in the quarterfinals will earn a spot in the semifinals, scheduled for the NorCal Spring College Showcase in May.
Additionally, each team who participated in the League Cup has earned a spot at that Showcase, even if they don’t advance in the tournament.
“It’s amazing to have teams from all these different leagues finally get the opportunity to play against each other in a competitive environment,” said NorCal ECNL RL Commissioner Kelcey Chaidez. “Even though some of these teams come from the same city, they aren’t usually given a chance to compete together in any meaningful games.”
