COACHES Q&A
Ahead of the game, we got our coaches thoughts going into the match and advice to players–check out their insight:
Valley Team Coach – Erin Sharpe
Director of Coaching, Pleasanton RAGE
NorCal State PDP Staff
id2 National Selection Coach (head 2024; asst 2023)
- What does it mean to you to be part of an event that celebrates some of the top young female athletes in Northern California?
- Erin: I am honored to have the opportunity to work with these amazing young women. I look forward to a great competition and celebration of all the hard work that earned them an invite into the All-Star game.
- What qualities do you look for when coaching youth players at an event like this?
- Erin: These players will be playing with a lot of new teammates that they have never played with before. Communication and a willingness to be adaptable to new systems and roles will be key to the group’s success. That said, players should be authentic to who they are, showcase their strengths, be disciplined defensively and play with a creative flare and confidence to take risks in the attack.
- Women’s soccer continues to grow rapidly at the collegiate and professional levels. What advice do you have for these young players as they prepare for the next stage of their soccer and academic journeys?
- Erin: Women’s soccer is more accessible than it has ever been. International, professional and collegiate women’s games of all levels are now available for us to watch in person, on tv, stream, etc., at virtually any time. While we should all enjoy being fans of the game, players need to be students of the game as well. Watching higher level play to help learn and prepare for the next level is critical. The recruitment process can also be long and stressful. Committing to a program should be celebrated, but it is certainly not a time to relax. Training and targeted preparation should be amped up after commitment to the next level, to ensure as smooth a transition as possible. That said, finding balance between soccer preparation, remaining a good student and enjoying time with family and friends is also key to help ensure overall success now, and at the next stage.
- How do you hope to impact these players?
- Erin: I look forward to helping to make this a great experience for all players, where they will find success and joy in the game. I also hope the experience will provide an opportunity to grow and positively influence the next chapter of their soccer journeys.
Bay Team Coach – Carmen Padilla
Youth Director, San Juan South
Head Coach, Delta College
- What does it mean to you to be part of an event that celebrates some of the top young female athletes in Northern California?
- Carmen: I am thrilled to be part of this incredible event giving our NorCal players the opportunity to compete against top players and represent their region and club in front of their community, families, and college scouts.
- What qualities do you look for when coaching youth players at an event like this?
- Carmen: As a coach, I value the qualities players can control — their attitude, work ethic, and team-first mentality. When players bring a positive mindset, consistent effort, and a willingness to put the team above themselves, they create an environment where everyone can succeed. The players selected for this event were recommended by their coaches, so I know they already have a strong foundation of technical and tactical ability. My focus is on helping them compete with character and represent their region with pride.
- Women’s soccer continues to grow rapidly at the collegiate and professional levels. What advice do you have for these young players as they prepare for the next stage of their soccer and academic journeys?
- Carmen: Women’s soccer is growing faster than ever, and with that growth comes incredible opportunities for young players. My advice is to stay focused on the things you can control — your attitude, work ethic, and commitment to learning. Continue to challenge yourself both on the field and in the classroom, success at the next level requires discipline. Enjoy the process, embrace the challenges, and never lose sight of why you started playing — the love of the game.
- How do you hope to impact these players?
- Carmen: My goal is for each player to feel challenged and inspired. I want them to leave this experience with greater confidence, a deeper love for the game, and motivation to keep growing.
