NPL Weekly: May 4-5 Recap

After this weekend’s matches fewer than two weeks remain until the May 18-19 NPL College Showcase in Davis where most of the league titles will be decided. While this means that NPL action is nearing its end, it also means that each result from this past weekend was among the biggest matches of the season for each side involved.

NPL SCHEDULES AND RESULTS: Boys, Girls

Here are your game of the week recaps:

NPL MATCHDAY — U17 Girls Champions League

Elk Grove Soccer 0 – Vision Academy 3

Goalscorers: Vision: Garcia, Blaise, Nodom

While these both Elk Grove Soccer and Vision Academy each came into this game near the top of the table, there was only one direction that the attacks went in for the entire 90 minutes: Vision’s. Teresa Garcia curled home an opener early in the first half before Vision added goals from Skylar Blaise and Emily Nodom, both off of set pieces, to earn all three points and continue to lead the U17 Girls Champions League.

KEY MATCHES

U15 Boys Champions League

Manteca FC 3 – Placer United 2

Goalscorers: Manteca: Velasquez (2), Cardona

Placer: Tanon, Zantout

A pair of unbeaten sides in Manteca FC and Placer United produced perhaps the game of the weekend when they met this past weekend, with a late winner from the hosts giving Manteca all three points. However, this game initially looked to be a blowout for the defending State Cup champions, who scored two goals in the first 16 minutes through a brace from Joey Velasquez. Chase Tanon and Rami Zantout then brought the game level shortly after halftime before Esteban Corona downed Placer with a goal 10 minutes from time.

U14 Boys Champions League

SF Glens 2 – CenCal Cosmos 5

Goalscorers: CenCal: Sandoval (2), Ekk (2), Esteves

Glens: Howarth, Arevalo

This game got off to a wild start as Silvestre Quintero Sandoval put visiting CenCal Cosmos up just five minutes into the game, only for SF Glens to retake the lead via strikes from Alastair Howarth and Anthony Arevalo, who had SF up on 20 minutes. But then the Cosmos came roaring back into the match, as Bryce Esteves tied it up two minutes later before Sandoval scored the winner in the 26th and Maximus Ekk added two insurance goals on either side of halftime to put it away.

U16 Girls Champions League

Pajaro Valley 1 – MVLA 3

Goalscorers: MVLA: O’Brien, Pianim, Montoya

Pajaro: Solis

While MVLA haven’t won the title yet, their 3-1 win over Pajaro Valley this past weekend put them just three points away from clinching the title. Behind goals from Leah O’Brien, Amalie Pianim, and Allie Montoya, MVLA moved to a perfect 11-0-0 on the season and knocked arguably their biggest challengers in Pajaro out of contention. Just one more win or a Pleasanton Rage loss will see MVLA capture the title.
