NorCal NPL Matchday #3 Recap

After poor air quality forced many postponements two weeks ago and many teams were off for the holiday weekend last weekend, NPL action returns all across the state on Saturday and Sunday. Though it’s only matchday three, points are already at a premium for squads looking to cement their places in the spring’s top divisions.

Here are your NPL games of the week:

U17 Boys NPL West

Stanford SC United 0 – San Jose Surf 3

Goalscorers:

San Jose: Frausto, Juarez, Gonzalez

Hoping to begin their NPL campaign on a positive note, Stanford SC United fell to visiting San Jose Surf via a 3-0 scoreline Saturday. Jared Frausto opened up the scoring with the eventual winner in the 25th minute before San Jose added on second half insurance goals from Christopher Juarez and Rolando Gonzalez to secure the full three points that has the Surf at the top of the table on nine points from three games.

U14 Girls NPL 1 West

9/11: Santa Clara Sporting – Napa United 9:00 AM @ Santa Clara Youth Soccer Park #2

Both Santa Clara Sporting and Napa United come into this important U14 NPL 1 West clash with three points already on the board. But while Napa United won their first game of the season in a tight 1-0 contest, Santa Clara Sporting have played two games and split the pair. Sporting have already scored five goals on the season, while Napa have yet to allow one.

U19 Boys NPL South

San Francisco Glens 3 – East Bay United 2

Goalscorers:

San Francisco: Strachan, Cahalane, Northrop

East Bay: Gonzalez, Baechler

After both sides had opened their U19 NPL South campaigns with large victories, the San Francisco Glens welcomed East Bay United just across the Bay Bridge this past weekend for a titanic early season contest that saw the home side take all three points. The Gens stormed out to an early lead behind first half goals from Liam Strachan and Barry Cahalane before seemingly putting the game away via a Nick Northrop strike early in the second half. However, East Bay United made it interesting as Andreas Baechler scored one and set up another to take EBU within one. From here, San Francisco were able to hold off the visitors and in doing so kept their place atop the table.

U19 Girls NPL 1 West

FC Bay Area Surf 3 – MVLA ECNL 1

Goalscorers:

Bay Area: Halladay (2), Frias

MVLA: Schremp

In this highly-anticipated Bay Area derby between two former national champions, FC Bay Area Surf came out to a quick lead before ultimately holding on to a 3-1 victory over local rivals MVLA. Jessie Halladay scored opportunistic goals in the sixth and 19th minutes to put the hosts up 2-0 early before MVLA’s Ana Schremp brought one back almost immediately. After a back-and-forth second half, America Frias sealed the deal for FC Bay Area, scoring in the 64th to ensure that Bay Area stayed at the top of the NPL 1 West table.
