NPL Match Day #8

The final opportunity for points prior to this upcoming weekend's NPL Fall Showcase has now passed. Many Champions League spots are still up for grabs, however, eleven more teams booked spots this past weekend. One of those teams, Lamorinda United, picked up a tough 1-0 win over Diablo FC in the U17 Girls NPL 1 West. In the U15 Boys NPL 1 West, Atletico Santa Rosa and Santa Clara Sporting drew 0-0 to remain in Champions League position.

With both sides desperately needing points to ensure their participation in the Champions League, Lamorinda United booked their spot in the U17 Girls NPL 1 West division with a 1-0 victory over Diablo FC at Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord Sunday. It was Margaux Clarke who did the damage for Lamorinda, burying a header off of a corner kick to put her side three points clear with just two games remaining for most sides. Each side dominated for a half as Diablo came out the stronger of the two teams before fading in the second period of play. While Lamorinda are assured of their future thanks to the victory, the loss puts Diablo on the outside looking in as the season comes down to the wire. Should they have won, Diablo would have topped the table with a one-point cushion over second-place Mustang SC. Instead, they now sit one point out of the fourth and final Champions League spot, though have a game in hand on the San Jose Earthquakes.

In a manner that was perhaps fitting of their current status of being tied on points, Saturday's key U15 Boys NPL West contest between Atletico Santa Rosa and Santa Clara Sporting was unable to produce a winner as the two sides played to a scoreless draw at Santa Rosa Junior College. However, thanks to Napa SA's victory over Force I, both ASR and Sporting remained on pace to qualify for the Champions League with the point garnered opening up a one-point cushion, though Atletico have a game in hand with two matches remaining to Sporting's one.
